Pickets Available for Original Tiger Shark Cove Playground Sponsors

As Wellington prepares to upgrade the playground at Tiger Shark Cove Park, residents who sponsored the original playground more than a decade ago by purchasing a picket are encouraged to stop by for one last visit to pick up their pickets. Residents can claim their pickets on Tuesday, February 28th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm as well as Saturday, March 3rd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Tiger Shark Cove Park located at 13800 Greenbriar Boulevard. Forms to purchase new pickets will be on hand at a cost of $20 per picket, which includes personalization. After March 3rd, pickets can be retrieved at Village Park located at 11700 Pierson Road.
 
The playground at Tiger Shark Cove Park officially closes to the public on Monday, February 20th as Wellington prepares for a community rebuild to upgrade the play area. Wellington is calling on residents to volunteer to help rebuild the playground from Wednesday, March 21st through Saturday, March 24th. This community rebuild project falls during the Palm Beach County School District’s spring break, and high school students are encouraged to volunteer to earn community service hours. Individual volunteers must be at least 15 years old. Children ages 10 to 14 can volunteer with a parent or guardian. Child care will be provided for children ages 5 to 10. The playground is slated to reopen on April 14th, 2012.
 
Approximately 75 volunteers are needed each day to make this community build project a success. The volunteer application is available electronically in the Events section at www.wellingtonfl.gov. Minors who wish to volunteer must obtain parental consent. Free Disaster Preparedness Training Feb. 25th

Nearly every day, we hear about natural disasters, terrorism and other crises on the news. But do you know what to do if a major disaster happens locally? Learn from experts at the National Sheriff’s Association during a free disaster preparedness workshop on Saturday, February 25th at the Wellington Community Center located at 12150 Forest Hill Boulevard. This full-day class takes place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The doors open at 8:30 am for check-in and a complimentary continental breakfast.
 
This seminar will cover the following topics:

Wellington Idol Winners Announced

Wellington is proud to announce the winners of the first-ever Wellington Idol talent competition!
 
Cara Young, age 14 – “Wellington Idol” Grand Prize Winner
Lexi Graves, age 12 – Division I Winner
Lexi Luca, age 15 – Division II Winner
Andrew Spinelli, age 20 – Division III Winner
 
As the Grand Prize winner of Wellington Idol, Cara Young won a $750 cash prize as well as a full scholarship sponsored by Talent INC to attend the Talent INC National Talent Conference & Showcase at the Hilton Walt Disney World Resort in March – a prize valued at $1,950! At the conference, Young will have the opportunity to perform in front of approximately 30 top talent agencies. In addition, all three Division Winners received a $250 cash prize.
 
Wellington would like to thank our judges Earleen “Lee” Carey-Marlow, Rocky Duvall and John Stevens as well as our Master of Ceremonies, Kyle Compton. All of the Wellington Idol competitors proved there is an amazing pool of talent in our Great Hometown!

Tiger Shark Cove Playground Closes Feb. 20th

The playground at Tiger Shark Cove Park, located at 13800 Greenbriar Boulevard, will be closed to the public beginning Monday, February 20th, 2012 as Wellington prepares to upgrade this much-loved facility.
 
From Wednesday, March 21st through Saturday, March 24th, 2012, volunteers will rebuild the playground. February Story Time at Scott's Place

Love is in the air at the Scott’s Place playground in Wellington! Beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 4th, children of all ages will be delighted with stories and free giveaways about Valentine’s Day. Professional storyteller Linda Spitzer will serve as the guest reader.
 
Story Time takes place at Scott’s Place barrier free playground located at 12190 Forest Hill Boulevard on the first Saturday of every month through May 2012. Participants are encouraged to enjoy the playground before and after the event. The park is designed with large play structures and ramps ensuring children and parents of all physical abilities can play together.

The Finals will be taped and broadcast at a later date on Comcast Channel 18.

Wellington’s Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 31st, 2012 will begin at 7:00 pm in Wellington’s Council Chambers at City Hall located at 12300 Forest Hill Boulevard. The meeting will last no later than 11:00 pm and, if needed, will be continued on Wednesday, February 1st beginning at 9:30 am.

Volunteer to Rebuild Tiger Shark Cove Playground

Wellington is calling on residents to pitch in to rebuild one of the most-loved playgrounds in the community! Volunteers are needed from Wednesday, March 21st through Saturday, March 24th, 2012 to revamp the Tiger Shark Cove playground located at 13800 Greenbriar Boulevard. This community rebuild project falls during the Palm Beach County School District’s spring break, and high school students are encouraged to volunteer to earn community service hours. Individual volunteers must be at least 15 years old. Children ages 10 to 14 can volunteer on-site with a parent or guardian. Child care will be provided for children ages 5 to 9.
 
The design team at Leathers and Associates delighted the crowd at Wellington’s Celebration Day event on January 21st, 2012 by unveiling the playground’s new design. This exciting plan upgrades many of the original features, such as the sandcastle play structure, while adding new elements including a pirate ship themed play area.

New Prize in Wellington Idol Competition

The pressure is on for the singers and dancers participating in Wellington’s first ever Wellington Idol talent competition! In addition to a $750 cash prize, the Grand Prize winner will walk away with a full scholarship sponsored by Talent INC to attend the Talent INC National Talent Conference & Showcase at the Hilton Walt Disney World Resort in March – a prize valued at $1,950! This conference will afford the Wellington Idol winner the ability to perform in front of 25 top agencies. Three Runners-Up will receive a $250 cash prize. In addition, Talent INC Directors will be in the audience beginning on the first night of the competition to scout local talent.
 
The first round of the Wellington Idol competition takes place on Friday, January 27th and Saturday, January 28th from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm at the Wellington Amphitheater located at 12100 Forest Hill Boulevard. The top 24 contestants will advance to the Semi-Finals on Friday, February 10th from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. The top 12 performers from that night will then advance to the Finals on Saturday, February 11th from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm, ending with the dramatic announcement of the winners. The Finals will be taped and will air at a later date on Comcast Channel 18.
 
Kyle Compton, Director for Talent INC of Florida, will serve as Wellington Idol’s Master of Ceremonies. The competition will also feature the following guest judges:
 
  • Rocky Duvall, Artistic Director at Dance Arts Conservatory and Executive Director of the non-profit Wellington Ballet Theatre
  • Earleen “Lee” Carey-Marlow, member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) with extensive theater, movie, television and directing experience
  • John Stevens, veteran Broadway actor, singer, dancer, choreographer and Master Talent Coach who teaches locally at Showbiz Kids & Teens
