Wellington is a great hometown! Keeping with that theme, the Village created a “Go Green Team”. Our Go Green Team consists of Village staff from a wide range of departments and combines diverse backgrounds in planning, solid waste, building, graphic design, finance and marketing.
The Go Green mission is to provide leadership, professional recommendations and education that helps ensure the Village continues to develop as an environmental responsible community; our goal is to ensure the Village remains a great hometown for generations to come. The Go Green Team has been busy and is currently designing initiatives including an enhanced recycling program, a green procurement policy and a variety of other policy initiatives including the creation of sustainable development components for the Village’s Comprehensive Plan (a comprehensive plan is a state-required document to guide community development).
The Village has begun to implement “green” practices in the day-to-day operational activities such as the “Go Paperless” initiative where employees and residents are encouraged to complete Village business without using paper and better utilizing the Village’s upgraded technology. Employees are reducing costs and environmental impacts by utilizing electronic document management and office practices such as powering down computers, installing timers on air conditioners and other electrical apparatuses. Residents will notice the results of other green initiatives around town including increased recycling efforts, the installation of LED (light emitting diode) lighting used for outdoor parks and median lighting and at the tennis courts, native landscaping materials, use of reclaimed water for irrigation, and LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified new construction of municipal facilities. In order to ensure we remain a great hometown, the Village will continue to develop and use “green” technologies in order to better serve residents and to be as environmentally responsible as possible.
The Village will continue to aggressively pursue outside funding from federal, state and regional sources. Currently, the Village is participating in the federally-funded Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program. This grant is provided to assist qualifying entities in implementing energy and conservation strategies. Be sure to explore the Village’s Go Green Guide. The Go Green Guide provides “green” office policy guidelines and information for Village staff but we hope that everyone takes the opportunity to read it. Whether you are a resident, business owner or a concerned citizen, you will find helpful information and tips that will show how you can contribute to a better Wellington.
