Sept. 11, 2011:                       Patriot Memorial Dedication 

Palm Beach County’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held in Wellington on September 11, 2011 – the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The ceremony will be followed by the dedication of Wellington’s Patriot Memorial. These events are free to attend and are open to the public.

About the Patriot Memorial Steel

Following the 9/11 attacks, World Trade Center artifacts, including Wellington’s Patriot Memorial steel, were relocated to New Jersey where they were temporarily housed. Engineers inspected the damage and selected a small portion of steel to include in a federal study. Wellington’s steel, known as C-46, was chosen because of its location directly below the plane’s impact zone.

C-46 is a three-column exterior section from the South tower of the World Trade Center. Prior to the tower’s collapse, C-46 was a window section from the 69th to 71st floors; this area of the tower was occupied by the investment firm Morgan Stanley.

At 9:03 am on September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 175 collided into the South tower at 590 miles per hour. Approximately 10,000 gallons of jet fuel immediately ignited a massive fire ball between the 78th and 84th floor. Seven stories below, Wellington’s steel sustained moderate fire damage.

Despite the damage, engineers were able to identify C-46 because its stenciled identifier was still visible. This white marking reads ‘PONYA 8T <569> B157-68-71.’ This indicated that the steel was originally destined for the Port of New York’s Authority World Trade Center. Its derrick division was 157, which identified which crane would lift the steel onto the building and the order it would be lifted.

A total of 2,830 victims died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. This includes 2,270 building occupants, 403 first responders and 157 plane passengers.

They've remembered in a way in which many people coming to Wellington will be reminded of not just the terrible attacks but also the tremendous sacrifice that so many firefighters, police officers, rescue workers and regular Americans made in order to save other people."

These words, spoken by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, outline the abundant need to memorialize the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and to honor the first responders who risk their lives every day to protect us. On September 11, 2011, Wellington will dedicate its Patriot Memorial, which will be located at the entrance to Wellington's Town Center.
 


Wellington and the Wellington Community Foundation, a non-profit organization, have accepted the responsibility of creating a touching and respectful Memorial where people will be able to reflect on the humanity of the after effects of 9/11 and admire all public safety professionals who have the courage to risk their lives to save others. The design for Wellington's Patriot Memorial incorporates an eternal flame and will feature an authentic column of steel recovered from the South tower of the World Trade Center.

Fundraising for this project is currently underway. Wellington formed the Wellington Community Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3), to accept donations from residents and private organizations. The world needs to remember how we came together in the aftermath of September 11th. This spirit of unity can still be seen in the remarkable support we've already received from private contributors. Our hope is that this Memorial will attest to the powerful and binding relationships we share with one another.

 Jan. 14 to Jan. 30, 2011:      World Trade Center Steel Displayed at the South Florida Fair

The steel column that will be permanently housed at Wellington’s Patriot Memorial was displayed at the South Florida Fair’s Expo Center. The display also included an exclusive videotaped message from former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a video slideshow of the steel's Journey to Palm Beach County and information about the steel.

Jan. 22, 2011:                        Patriot Memorial Groundbreaking Ceremony

Wellington’s Patriot Memorial Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on Saturday, January 22, 2011. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue lifted the 58-foot by 30-foot Patriot Flag at the Patriot Memorial site for the duration of the ceremony.

Jan. 22, 2011:                        Massive Patriot Flag Visits Wellington and the South Florida Fair 

A super-sized flag that will fly at Ground Zero this September 11th was first raised in Wellington during the Patriot Memorial Groundbreaking Ceremony on Saturday, January 22, 2011. The 58-foot by 30-foot Patriot Flag is currently on a 50-week, 50-state tour, ending on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 when it will be lifted at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Following the ceremony, the Patriot Flag was transported to the South Florida Fair where it was raised above Wellington’s World Trade Center steel. This was the first time the Patriot Flag encountered a steel column from the collapsed Twin Towers.
